1. What actually falls inside “cabinet hardware”
The category is broader than most first-time buyers assume, which is why quotations for “cabinet hardware” are rarely comparable. The American national standard for the category, ANSI/BHMA A156.9, defines the scope in a way worth reading literally. It covers:
- hinges
- knobs and pulls
- catches
- shelf rests
- standards and brackets
- drawer slides
- rotating shelves
- track with guides for sliding panels
and it contains performance tests covering operational, cyclical, strength and finish criteria.
Two consequences follow directly from that scope:
- “Cabinet hardware” is a basket, not a product. A quotation that lumps hinges and drawer slides together without naming the standard for each is an unverifiable quotation.
- Each sub-category has its own failure mode. Hinges fail on cycle life and adjustment, slides fail on load and cycle life, pulls fail on finish and fixing strength. One specification sheet cannot cover all three properly.
2. The sub-categories buyers actually specify
Hinges
The dominant question is not “steel or stainless” but which hinge family: full-overlay, half-overlay, inset; clip-on vs screw-fixed; soft-close with an integrated damper or separate. In the European market the hinge family you specify maps to a named standard — EN 15570 covers hinges pivoting on a vertical axis and sets out strength and durability test methods and requirements.
What to put on the spec sheet: hinge type and overlay, opening angle, cup diameter and drilling pattern, door-thickness range, adjustment ranges (side/height/depth), soft-close requirement, and the standard you expect the durability claim to be tested against.
Knobs and pulls
The largest source of claims disputes, because “brushed nickel” and “satin nickel” are marketing words, not specifications. What is verifiable is the substrate (zinc alloy, aluminium, stainless steel, brass), the finish process (electroplated, powder coated, PVD, anodised), and the finish nomenclature standard your market uses — in North America, ANSI/BHMA A156.18 is the standard for materials and finishes.
What to put on the spec sheet: material, finish process and finish code, centre-to-centre distance and screw length, load/fixing expectation, colour consistency tolerance against an approved sample, and packaging (individually bagged, screws included or not).
Drawer slides (extension elements)
This is where load and cycle life live, and it is the category most often quoted without any standard at all. In Europe, EN 15338 is the standard that specifies test methods and requirements for the strength and durability of extension elements and their components — the category that includes drawer runners.
What to put on the spec sheet: extension type (partial/full), side-mount vs under-mount, side clearance, mounting method, load classification claimed, cycle-life claim, soft-close/self-close requirement, and the standard the load and cycle claims are tested against. If a supplier quotes a load figure without saying what it was tested to, you are buying a promise.
Catches, shelf supports and cabinet locks
Small parts, disproportionate failure rates in the field. Shelf supports and catches sit inside the A156.9 scope. Cabinet locks have their own standard: ANSI/BHMA A156.11. If your product ships to the US market with a lock, treat the lock as a separately specified item, with its own report.
What to put on the spec sheet: for a lock — keying/cylinder type, master-key requirement, fixing centres; for shelf supports — pin diameter and shelf thickness; for catches — retention force and material.
Track for sliding panels
The last item in the A156.9 scope and the one most often designed after the cabinet is already drawn. Specify track length, panel weight class, number of rollers, and end stops before the panel dimensions are frozen.
3. Materials and finishes: the part that decides your complaint rate
Cabinet hardware fails in service far more often on finish than on structure. Build the specification in this order.
Step 1 — substrate. Zinc alloy (die-cast) for complex shapes and low cost; aluminium for lightweight pulls; stainless steel 304 or 316 for wet rooms, marine air and commercial kitchens; carbon steel for structural brackets and hinges where a coating is acceptable. The grade matters more than the family name: “stainless” covers alloys with very different corrosion behaviour, so name the grade.
Step 2 — finish process. Electroplating (chrome, nickel, zinc), powder coating, PVD, anodising. Electroplated zinc on steel is defined by a standard — ASTM B633 covers electrodeposited zinc coatings applied to iron or steel articles for corrosion protection — which is exactly the kind of standard reference a quotation should name instead of “good plating”.
Step 3 — the corrosion test, not a corrosion adjective. Require a documented neutral salt spray result and name the method. The method is standardised: ASTM B117 is the practice that covers the apparatus, procedure and conditions required to create and maintain the salt spray (fog) test environment.
Read this before you trust a salt-spray number. ASTM states plainly that (i) the practice does not prescribe the type of test specimen or exposure periods to be used for a specific product, nor the interpretation of results, and (ii) prediction of performance in natural environments has seldom been correlated with salt spray results when used as stand-alone data. Salt spray is a comparative, process-control tool. Used between two suppliers who tested the same part the same way, it is useful. Used as a warranty of years of coastal service, it is not.
Step 4 — colour and finish consistency. Agree a physical approved sample (or a measured colour target) and state the tolerance. Finishes from different batches — especially PVD and powder coat — can read differently under retail lighting, and “same colour” is not a specification.

Three rules when you use this table:
- A component standard is not a product approval. EN 15570 tested hinges do not make the cabinet compliant with EN 14749 — the furniture-level standard tests the assembled unit.
- Ask for the report, not the badge. A standard number in a brochure is a claim; the test report is evidence. Check the model tested against the article you are buying — substitution of a similar-but-different article is the most common failure.
- Verify with your own lab. On a first order, and always where the destination market enforces the claim, confirm the critical characteristics (corrosion, load, cycle life) with your own or an independent accredited laboratory before mass production.

What is the MOQ?
There is no standard MOQ, and any single figure you read online should be treated with suspicion.
